The House in the Woods

..not to be confused with the pathetic movie «Cabin in the Woods», has been a dream of ours for a long time now. Mostly as a joke, we've been talking about everything we're going to do when we acquire our 'house in the woods'. I know I've mentioned this before, but 2012 has been an awesome year in every way possible. Had I been superstitious or into astrology I would have said it seems like the planets have aligned for me, bringing me all kinds of joy and happiness, but alas.. I'm not. 2012 has been an extraordinary year for me, for us, and September 7th we wrote a little bit of personal history: we found our very own 'house in the woods', and we bought it!

It all happened so fast. The whole ordeal started last Friday when I was browsing our local newspaper for some odd reason. I never read newspapers online, much less the smaller local ones. In the middle of the page a banner was flashing, showing sliding ads for apartments and houses for sale in the area. I didn't pay much attention until it showed a little yellow house I thought looked so cute! I decided to show Øyvind after work, not that we were looking for a house or anything, and as we walked towards our regular coffee shop I told him about my findings. He picked up a newspaper, browsed through the real estate section, found the house I had been talking about - and another house as well. We decided to attend the viewings of both houses the following Monday, but since both were showed at the same time, we picked the yellow house as our first priority. My goodness, it was awful. Seriously. It looked to cute in the ad! So we left. Totally disappointed.

We still had some time left before the viewing of the other house was over, so we decided to go have a look just for the heck of it. We weren't really interested, even though it looked like a nice enough house, and when we exited the main road to find the house we were pretty taken aback by how secluded it seemed. The road leading up towards the house wasn't even a real road, it was a dirt road, seemingly impossible to climb during the months of winter. We quickly agreed that we weren't interested in this house, and almost turned the car around without even viewing the actual house. Thankfully - yes, thankfully - Øyvind insisted we'd go in to have a look since we had driven all the way up there, and somewhat reluctant I got out of the car to look around. The house itself was a very nice house surrounded by trees and vegetation. It had a small patch of grass on side with some greenery, a patio, a large balcony and it looked very well kept. When we entered the house I was amazed by how inviting it was. I couldn't quite shake the feeling of being in the middle of absolutely nowhere, but somehow the house made me «forget» about the fact that I didn't want to leave our apartment in the city. As I said, it was very inviting, bright and I felt at home almost immediately! I loved just about everything there. The hardwood floors, all the downlights everywhere, the large windows letting in lots of light, the beautiful kitchen, how every essential room was situated downstairs (with a loft lounge, two bedrooms and a storeroom upstairs) - and most importantly how nothing needed to be done, no refurbishing or nothing, it was just perfect.

On Tuesday we went back for another look, to make sure there would be room for everything I need of equipment and to measure the stairs to be sure there would be space enough for a stairlift. If the bathroom had been too small, or the stairs had been too narrow, it would be idiotic to buy the house in the first place. I went back there almost hoping the feeling of being in love with this house would turn out to be an illusion, but as we entered the house I just knew I belonged there. In my head I started decorating the place, picturing having breakfast in the morning sun, just feeling content. I knew the dogs would love it there as well, with the possibility of running free (to some extent) with grass beneath their paws as opposed to gravel and asphalt. The mere thought made me happy! When Thursday arrived we finally had everything lined up, and it was time to place our bid. And on Friday at approximately 14:25 PM we got a phone call from the realtor, congratulating us. Our 'house in the woods' suddenly became a reality - and November 1st is the date when we receive the keys to our new home.

  1. I’m so incredibly happy for you!

  2. Weee…gratulerer!

Smile

    • Tusen, tusen takk, Monica!

    • Tusen takk igjen, Marie! Grin

  9. You have no idea how happy this makes me Smile CONGRATULATIONS to the both of you Smile

  10. Smooth! Gratulerer igjen! Smile Ser kjempefint ut!

  11. Congratulations for you both. I’m sure the dogs will love it. I love to read that your dream is comming through. Hug Smile

    • Thank you so much, Nele! Smile I’m sure the dogs will love it too, I wish we could explain to them why everything’s upside down and how much better it’ll be in only three weeks. Thank you, it means a lot to me. Smile Hug!
